Several times during the movie, comments were made to the effect of "when this family gets sorted out, it will snow in August", "when the kids have learned to behave, it will snow in August", or "when that girl [Evangeline] is around when you need her, it will snow in August." I believe Nanny McPhee's ugly appearance is a reflection of the ugly behavior of those around her. One might be labelled the original version, the other is tagged THE BUMPER EDITION. The film is beautifully made with imaginative sets in a psychedelic colour scheme, and the pranks of the seven youngsters are so outrageous that even the most mischievous children will know that they should not try any of this at home. They are, in order, (1) to go to bed when they are told (and to say please), (2) to get up when they are told, (3) to get dressed when they are told (and to say thank you), (4) to listen, and (5) to do as they are told.

When they learn to listen (and say thank you), her uni brow disappears, her hair turns blonder and wavy, her droopy earlobes disappear, and her complexion improves. I believe the children and other characters saw her differently as they got to know her true heart. She was, in that sense a beautiful woman, and by the time we parted ways, I could honestly say that I thought she was 'cute'. Three books, actually. It is a joyful, touching, and well written tale!

Nanny McPhee magically transforms a family by allowing the children to think for themselves and to face the consequences of their decisions. No need to stay around. I loved this when I first watched it over ten years ago, and recently saw it again with my three-year-old grandson. I have to agree that the film is trying to convey what we do naturally; see past the exterior and look into the soul of someone.
