March 28, 1993 "Alfred Sisley Artist Overview and Analysis". Thank you for your comments and selection of paintings.I was a docent at the McNay Art museum in San Antonio where they had two of Sisley’s landscapes. While in London, Sisley is said to have spent much of his time visiting the exhibitions of This monumental landscape was exhibited at the Salon of 1868. Monet's influence was in fact discernible in Sisley work; he was beginning to use brighter pigment in the broken patches which characterized the work of Monet, Pissarro and Renoir during the 1870s and early1880s. The application of quick, feathery brushstrokes captures the ephemeral effects of light on a surface. The dark colors used for the buildings and bridge contrast against the bright clouds. Although it is unknown if Caillebotte was aware of Sisley's painting, the two artists chose similar subject matter and viewpoints to depict the landscape.

Despite being one of the figureheads of Impressionism, he is overshadowed by some of his more famous contemporaries, such as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Sisley was as good as Monet in my opinion. This may perhaps be due to the fact that Sisley straddled two different cultures, having been born to English parents in France and later dividing his time between the two countries.
