She had graduated with a physics “certificate “ from Cambridge, because women weren’t granted degrees. I heartily disagree, spy films do not all have to be fast paced intrigue. That value here is that one human can break through the simplicfied truths of time-bound consciousness, the illusions of wrong and right, dares to think his own moral mind and make a decision that serves humanity on a deeper level of evolution. Was this review helpful? When she reads of the death of her old acquaintance Sir William Mitchell, she realises "they" have finally come for him, after all these years. Her character is based on the true story of Melita Norwood who was identified at age 87 as being a long-serving Soviet spy.As far as awkward family secrets go, Granny Joan has one that will definitely ruin the holidays: she used to be a spy for the Russians. Anyone out there need a quiet, intelligent and observant, nearly invisible (because I'm a woman) spy? ‘Red Joan’ Dir. 6 out of 9 found this helpful. This is a young woman's film and Judy Dench was the translator and narrator. A thought provoking and interesting film that is intelligent in its approach. I was impressed with the story and immersed inside it. This book does a remarkable job of creating a sympathetic connectLoosely inspired by the story of KGB spy Melita Norwood, this novel tells the story of Joan Stanley, an elderly woman who wakes up one morning to British Security Services knocking on her door asking questions about her involvement with a recently deceased suspected Communist spy. People complain that it is not historically accurate when it is a story based on something but using poetic licence to make a film with another slant. Was this review helpful? Red Joan is a movie with exceptional production values: it's beautifully written with a nonlinear but easy to follow and riveting narrative. This book is set during the Cold War when Russia, the US and England are developing the atom bomb.I was one of the lucky First Reads winners of this book. This understated arrival seems most appropriate for such a well-written and gently presented novel. I usually don’t like novels that go back and forth in time (or movies for that matter) but, this book does it relatively seamlessly so you hardly notice. Was she acting out of a sense of moral duty, to even things up? But the storyline of this movie did not work for me. Joan is presented as a naive and innocent individual, easily manipulated by actual agents, and as someone who genuinely believes that what she is doing is for the good of mankind. The acting is excellent, the setting is grey, cloudy England and the story is very interesting and keeps you involved. Judi Dench is as wonderful as ever and Sophie Cookson as the young Joan is mesmerising. Film was ok but felt like a missed opportunity. With its beautifully-designed cover, credited to Suzanne Dean, it suggests a quiet, well-behaved story about quiet, well-behaved characters, despite the title.Brilliant! It probably helps to have an interest in the history and politics of the 1930s-1950s but I enjoyed this film a lot.
Trevor Nunn. Reviews ‘Goodbye Mister Wong’: FIDMarseille Review. She studied Latin and logic at Southampton University for a year before dropping out. I also liked her writing style. According to … When the MI5 come knocking on her door, the whole story of her Cambridge days and the intelligence work she did during the war is revealed. The reasons for Joan's betrayal of state secrets are slowly revealed and are shown to be deeper than mere ideology. Was this review helpful? Loosely based on a real person, Melina Norwood, this book was a fascinating story of a woman who lives her life with a huge secret. I read the first 50 pages or so and had to start again later. It took me two starts to actually finish this book.
Was this review helpful? Sophie Cookson I thought did above average, but I personally could not get through the main point, and that is, sometime treason is ok, if you heart is in the right place.
