Here on October 19, 1781, British forces under Lord Charles Cornwallis surrendered to the combined American and French armies led by General George Washington. The Yorktown Visitor Center on Colonial Parkway interprets the Revolutionary War battle there, but also has some Civil War information. The Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center is situated where the left flank of the British inner defenses was located. A National Cemetery established in 1866, now part of Colonial National Historic Park, contains over 2,200 interments, mostly Union dead.
