Hayley discovered her passion for environmental justice during high school as she began to grapple with the social and ecological threats faced by her local community. Interns are supervised by the WCO graduate assistant. Outside of his studies, James can often be found exploring new hiking trails or perched somewhere with a book.Hayley is an undergraduate student at Appalachian State University, majoring in both journalism and sustainable development. She wrote widely during college, which included serving as the editor-in-chief of her school’s newspaper. Carolina is a senior Sustainable Development student at Appalachian State University.
Blueprint NC is the left-wing group that gained notoriety with their "eviscerate, mitigate, litigate, cogitate and agitate strategy memo in 2013. This project could threaten family property, drinking water, and animal habitats for generations to come.The Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley pipeline are 2 pipelines that are proposed and in Matt Wasson’s words “We’re fighting those… those will either be won or lost this year”. He is currently at Vanderbilt Divinity School studying religion and economic justice. They advocate in 5 states and have offices in Boone, NC; Charlottesville, VA; and Knoxville, TN. The pipeline would cut through thousands of sections of privately owned land and require a large strip of permanently cleared land for the entirety of the 600 miles. In the past, these communities were left to fight billion-dollar energy corporations entirely on their own. There is no stipend provided for internships, however Appalachian Voices will reimburse pre-approved expenses associated with the internship, such as travel. Internship should be considered an Unpaid Internship for College Credit and/or Life Experience. The sun beats down on King Street as tourists and students alike enjoy local shops, dining, and entertainment. White shelves adorned with beautiful jewelry graced the wall to my right, while a classic long white table was positioned carefully in front. She is particularly interested in environmental work as it connects to communication, policy, and advocacy.
