3-4 hours in, you are still wandering around getting hit in the face by spiders in a generic forest with no actual view of the river. I decided to try out the blue (decent) to black (horror show) trail this weekend, here are my thoughts: What a great place!!! Menu & Reservations Make Reservations . Trail was muddy in spots but with all the rain we've had this summer that was to be expected. Use our GPS maps, elevation charts, get directions, or view pictures from the trail to plan your next hike or backpacking trip. This was a bummer, as that was the reason we went to this trailhead. Get directions, reviews and information for Bear Run Nature Reserve in Mill Run, PA. Bear Run Nature Reserve 1478 Mill Run Rd Mill Run PA 15464. I had to abandon the lower portion and walk back via the roadway. I deviated from the map for lunch at a campsite but that was no more than 100 ft.Did about 2/3 of the Black Loop. Problem, signage was lacking at about 4-5 miles on the black loop.
GPS coordinates were essential to staying on course. Flagship Property of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Bear Run Nature Reserve Since 1963 this 5,000-acre natural area has been owned and protected by Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. There is nothing to see on it unless you are into spiders that leave surprisingly robust webs at mouth height. I lost the trail and spent roughly a half hour crawling through dense, spider-infested foliage with a stick. Nearly the entire trail was shaded!!!!!! The trailhead is just off the parking lot, right behind a converted barn.
Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.Note: Trail is closed at the falling water exit (west side of 381) due to COVID-19 measures: for up to date information, see the park link here: https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/OhiopyleStatePark/Pages/default.aspx At this point, I was too tired, thirsty, and in too much physical pain to bother with the overlook. That section needs to be marked more clearly.Turn off your ad blocker to see a map of this trailYoughiegheny River Trail: Ohiopyle to ConnellsvilleLaurel Highland Hiking Trail: Maple Summit Rd. Had to backtrack. I know we've driven by here dozens of times going to Ohiopyle or Fallingwater and just thought it was a parking lot of some sort. I decided to forge my own path, close to Fallingwater. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until October. However, the decent leading back to the road was overgrown, and there were no markings on other side of the road.
It lies along the west slope of Laurel Ridge, facing the spectacular Youghiogheny River gorge. I crawled along a stream, under and over downed trees and fallen rocks. Bear Run Nature Reserve has over 20 miles of trails, of which we hiked about half. We are blessed to have such a great trail in PA!!!! Please note that the address shown is an approximation, based on Fallingwater which is right across the road. The trail was a little overgrown on the singletrack heading up to the ridge but otherwise a pleasant walk with all intersections well marked. Eventually I came to a row of dry/dead pine trees, and finally the road. Sometimes you can hear people in the distance having fun on the river. i’d also give this trail a difficult rating in reguards to length and terrain. Great day for a hike. It went sour quickly before crossing 381 (after taking the blue trail east from the parking lot). Eventually I found the trail again and made it to 381. info center in parking area says it takes about 6 hours to hike but that’s misleading. Markers up to #9 were fine.
