However, the second half of the book got a little… Weird. I wasn’t even planning to get it but I’m quite glad I did. In the second half more fantasy elements got brought into the story and I think that could have been done better.
It was around this time that I started to notice the excessive use of similes and metaphors.
I was a little wary about it too, seeing all the negative reviews but it surprised me too. It’s a story about 17-year-old Alice, who’s used to being on the run with her mother, Ella, as bad luck seems to follow them wherever they go. I saw some people go harsh on it but to me it was quite a page turner and while I acknowledge the problems with the book I still quite enjoyed reading it!So in the story we follow Alice and her mother. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong. This comes in handy when they begin to notice people around the city that are not from this world but are from her grandmothers book of fairy tales.Their hunt sends them to Hazel Wood, the house her grandmother owned and where her mother grew up. The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert is a modern take on classic fairy tales. I ordered my first Owlcrate subscription box and received an exclusive cover edition of The Hazel Wood. We have tons of male protagonists like her and they are usually well liked. To me the author wanted to cram in as much as she could about The Hinterland, it’s stories and characters that there were a few loose ends. Synopsis- Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. After Alice gets to the Hinterland (or Hazel Wood? I’m still not clear which is actually the fairytale land), the story gets so much less interesting. 16 comments Alyssa says: January 30, 2018 at 9:00 am I’m very excited to be able to read this — I’ve heard so many good things about it.
With no other choice Alice has to ally with her classmate, Ellery Finch, who is a devoted fan of her grandmother’s book. Title: The Hazel Wood Author: Melissa Albert Publication Year: 2018 Publisher: Penguin Books Pages: 368 Rating: ★★☆☆☆. I won’t excuse her treating Finch, the only black character, the way she did.
I liked Finch, he toned down the sharpness Alice brought into the story and he was quite a pleasant character to read about. One thing I really, really appreciated about the book was the fact that there was no romance (or barely any, if there was it might have gone over my head really). At one point one of the main characters dies suddenly, and then it turns out he isn’t dead! It felt like there was a sharp cut between the first and the second half of the book.Characters. I didn’t hate the first half but it wasn’t interesting enough for me. I can’t really pinpoint why, but I wasn’t very invested after that point. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set.
Try some non fiction audiobooks. If I’m going to listen to someone talk, I would rather listen to a podcast because the hosts are usually more dynamic and the content that they are sharing is easier to absorb in 30-45 minute segments. Also, I wanted the story to be more high stakes. After Alice gets to the Hinterland (or Hazel Wood? Together they set on the journey to get Alice’s mother back. The writing was really great, for the first half of the story got me off of my feet, I was flying through it. The story didn’t need and thank the skies the author did not put in any. Review: The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert (light spoilers) This book was solidly okay. I think I liked Alice a bit better than Finch, but neither was really a favourite of mine.He was much better at the end of the book.
Glad you enjoyed though! They tend to be an easier segue if you are already used to listening to podcasts. (Still those two elements I mentioned up there are not excused). Also I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE ENDING TO ALICE THREE TIMES IS . If you’ve read The Hazel Wood, let me know what you thought!I also did the audio for Hazelwood but DNF. At one point one of the main characters dies suddenly, and then it turns out he isn’t dead! I’m a little surprised I even finished it, not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because I listened to it as an audiobook and I end up DNFing most audiobooks. This review has spoilers.
I got quite busy and I was in a blogging slump so I had a little trouble with writting up reviews. Alice and Ellery begin to track down copies of her grandmothers book but with no luck.
