It is a member of the M109 Group, a group that contains over 50 galaxies. which appear below.
A team of European astronomers is using the NASA/ESAHubble Space Telescope to look back in time.
• A mapping activity. Lithograph: Spiral Galaxy NGC 3982 (PDF) (2.6MB; Adobe Reader required) This image from the Hubble Space Telescope showcases the well-known features of a spiral galaxy, as seen in NGC 3982. This face-on spiral galaxy, called NGC 3982, is striking for its rich tapestry of star birth, along with its winding arms. It lies at a distance of about 68.00 light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major.. This color image is composed of exposures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), and the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). A captioned inset on the back shows that no two spiral galaxies look exactly the same, but they have similar characteristics.
Astronomers also take note of whether the spiral arms are tightly or loosely wrapped around the core of the galaxy.

It will be lost to dawn twilight around 03:22, 24° above your north-western horizon. The accompanying activity, In Search Of...Spiral Galaxies, is a curriculum support tool designed for use as an introductory inquiry activity.
They have imaged the spiral galaxy NGC 3982 and hundreds of other galaxies in the hope that one of the millions of stars in these images will some day explode as a supernova.
• A large-number recognition activity.
From Redmond , NGC 3982 is visible all night because it is circumpolar.
